2021.3.17. / Advance payment of patent fees, etc., now available by credit card

On March 2, 2021, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced that the Cabinet had approved the "Draft Law for Partial Revision of the Patent Law, etc.".
It will be submitted to the current Diet session and will be enforced by the end of FY2021.

The proposed amendment will make it possible to pay patent fees and other fees in advance by bank transfer or credit card, and to hold oral hearings for appeals on the validity of patents via web conference.
In addition, if there is an infringement of trademark rights, it will be possible for customs to confiscate the goods even in the case of personal importation, and to crack down on overseas businesses that sell the goods, even if the purpose is for personal use.
