2023.10.24. / Cabinet Office Holds Study Group on Intellectual Property Rights for AI

On October 4, 2023, the Cabinet Office of Japan held a meeting to discuss intellectual property rights in the age of AI.

The committee will discuss a wide range of issues, including addressing concerns and risks of intellectual property infringement latent in AI-generated products, establishing a mechanism to protect the rights of creators and ensure that the profits from their creative activities are appropriately returned, how to handle autonomous inventions by AI, and issues in patent examination practice in the use of AI.

A total of four meetings have been scheduled for this fiscal year, from October to December 2023, and the study group of experts will continue to meet from January 2024 onward.
