The Japan Patent Office (JPO) prepares and publishes the Patent Administration Annual Report (Materials and Statistics) every year, and has also started to publish the monthly preliminary figures that form the basis of this report.

The preliminary monthly figures are provisional totals of the number of applications, registrations, and appeals relating to patents, utility models, designs, and trademarks, the number of international applications relating to patents and trademarks, and the number of requests for examination of patent applications, based on the JPO's data for statistical processing.
