On July 27, 2022, the JPO published its Patent Administration Annual Report 2022.
According to the report, the number of patent applications in FY2021 was 289,200, up 728 from the previous year, and the number of requests for examination was 238,557, up 6,342 from the previous year.

The number of patent applications from China continues to increase, while the number of patent applications from the U.S. and Europe also began to increase.
As for designs and trademarks, the number of applications for design registration from China in particular showed remarkable growth, and as a result of strengthening the trademark examination system, the number of trademark primary examination notices in FY2021 increased by 23.3% over the previous year.
