On August 30, 2023, the Japan Patent Office announced that it will provide a function on its patent information platform; J-Platpat, to display and search information on the legal status of patents.
Patent applications filed with the Japan Patent Office on or after January 1, 1998 are eligible, with the first phase release scheduled for September 10, 2023.
Subsequent releases will follow in phases.
The JPO defines "state," "stage," and "event" as legal statuses provided in J-PlatPat as follows.
■Legal Status
State | Patent application and Patent status. "Active" or "Inactive". |
Stage | Patent application or the main procedural stages of a patent application. There are seven stages. "Before request for examination", "examination", "appeals under assessment", "Patent Effective", "Objection or Validity", "Rejection or Office Action", "Patent expired." |
Event | Procedural acts by the applicant, the right holder, the patent office, and third parties. About 50 different events defined. |
