2023.9.21. / METI Releases Request for Tax Reform, Including Innovation Box Taxation

On August 31, 2023, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry released its tax reform request for FY2024.
The Innovation Box Taxation System applies preferential tax rates to income arising from patents and other intellectual property.

The creation of this program was requested from the perspective of improving the competitiveness of the location as an R&D center by creating a business environment that is comparable to that of overseas countries, and encouraging private-sector investment in intangible assets in the creation of intellectual property, in order to promote innovation in Japan.
In Europe, the introduction of this system began in the 2000s, and in recent years, Asian countries have also introduced or are considering the system.
