Patent System in Japan

From October 1, 2019, a new mediation procedure called “Intellectual Property Mediation” has started in relation to disputes over intellectual property rights.

“Intellectual Property Mediation” is a mediation committee consisting of judges, lawyers and patent attorneys based on documents submitted by a certain date regarding disputes over intellectual property rights that have arisen in the course of business. This is a judicial service that provides a third dispute resolution tool that has characteristics not found in lawsuits and provisional dispositions. 

The JPO held the 9th Japan-ASEAN Patent Office Directors' Meeting and the ASEAN Patent Office Symposium 2019 in Tokyo on August 6-7, 2019.

 

The JPO held its first Japan-Africa Patent Office policy dialogue in time for TICAD7 held in Yokohama from August 27 (Tuesday) to 30 (Friday), 2019.

 

With the remarkable development of AI-related technology in recent years, the JPO has investigated the status of AI-related patent applications in Japan and overseas, assuming that patent applications have increased across technical fields and this trend will continue.

 

In June 2019, the Fair Trade Commission published “Points of a Survey Report on Abuse Acts of Superior Position Targeting Manufacturer's Know-how and Intellectual Property Rights”.
