Patent System in Japan

On November 8, 2022, the JPO announced that effective December 1, the fees for individual designation of Japan for international design applications will be revised.
Attention should be paid when filing an international application designating Japan.

On November 1, 2022, the Ohma Fisheries Cooperative Association filed a trademark reapplication, expanding the definition of "Ohma Tuna".
The reapplication defines "Oma tuna" as tuna that is landed at the port of Oma in the town of Oama and received by the fishery cooperative, regardless of where the fish was caught.

On October 26, 2022, the JPO announced that the Patent Prosecution Highway Program with the Brazilian Industrial Property Office will be extended until November 30, 2026.
The program is expected to be extended as necessary after 2026.

On October 4, 2022, the JPO held its first "Connecting Japan Patent Office" event in Kumamoto Prefecture, an event to disseminate local intellectual property initiatives throughout Japan.
The event was attended by 120 people at the local venue and 230 people online.

On October 14, 2022, the JPO announced that, in accordance with a Cabinet decision, the deadline for the advance payment of patent fees, etc. by patent revenue stamps will expire on March 31, 2023.
