Patent System in Japan

On May 10, 2022, the JPO decided to suspend the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) with the Russian Federal Office of Intellectual Property, Patents and Trademarks (ROSPATENT).

On May 6, 2022, the JPO updated the list of designated fees for international applications for designs under the Hague Agreement.
There are two types of international filing fees for designs: a transmittal fee paid to the Japan Patent Office when filing an international application through the Japanese Patent Office, and a fee paid directly to the International Bureau (WIPO).

On May 6, 2022, the JPO notified that subsidies for overseas IP litigation expense insurance for this fiscal year will begin for subscriptions as of July 1, 2022.
With the increase in the number of Japanese companies expanding overseas, there has been an increase in the number of cases of disputes over intellectual property infringement in China and other countries, and problems have emerged for small and medium-sized companies, such as being forced to withdraw from business or being forced into a crisis of company survival because they cannot afford the large costs required to handle disputes.

On May 9, 2022, JPO released "SDGs and Value Creation - Entrance to Inquiry," a teaching material content on IP creation education for high school teachers and students, on its website.
The set includes slides, worksheets, and instructional plans that can be used in class to deepen students' understanding of the SDGs and intellectual property.

On April 28, 2022, the JPO published a notice of application containing nucleotide or amino acid sequences.
Applications containing nucleotide or amino acid sequences in the specification, etc., are now required to submit a sequence table in accordance with WIPO standard ST.25.
Currently, applications containing nucleotide or amino acid sequences in the specification, etc., require submission of a sequence table in accordance with WIPO Standard ST.25. However, due to the revision of the PCT Administrative Instructions (scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2022), international applications (including applications with priority claims) filed on or after July 1, 2022 will be required to submit a sequence table in accordance with the newly formulated WIPO Standard ST.26 when nucleotide or amino acid sequence is included in the specification, submission of a sequence table in accordance with the newly formulated WIPO standard ST.26 is required.
