Patent System in Japan

On February 18, 2022, the JPO published "If it's your first time, read here - The do's and don'ts of filing a design application.

On March 4, 2022, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) announced the status of IP infringing goods seized by customs in FY2020.
In FY2020, the number of cases of import suspension exceeded 30,305 for the first time in three years.

On March 1, 2022, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) created and released a website that consolidates intellectual property support measures for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The objective is to support the intellectual property management of SMEs by utilizing support measures that meet their needs.

With the renewal of the Japan-Vietnam Patent Prosecution Highway Pilot Program (PPH) for three years starting April 1, 2019, the Vietnam National Intellectual Property Office has doubled the number of PPH applications it accepts per year from 100 to 200, but it has reached the maximum number of PPH applications for the period from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022, and has stopped accepting applications.

On January 31, 2021, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) announced that it will strengthen its comprehensive support in cooperation with related organizations in order to deal with the risk of third parties applying for and registering Japanese place names, their own trademarks, regional brands, etc. in China and Taiwan.
In the future, the JPO will provide information to local governments, regional companies, and other related parties, and at the same time, strengthen overall support for voluntary efforts such as early trademark registration and requests for cancellation.
