Patent System in Japan

On October 5, 2023, the Patent Office updated the individual fees under the Protocol to the Madrid Agreement between Canada and the European Union.

On October 2, 2023, the JPO announced that it will revise the search fees for applications filed with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore after November 1, 2023.

On September 1, 2023, the JPO announced that it is developing a system and preparing related laws and regulations in preparation for the systemization of online document dispatch, which is scheduled to begin operating.
According to the revised Special Law, a specified notice, etc. sent online is deemed to have reached the applicant when 10 days have elapsed without the applicant receiving it, from the date when the applicant becomes able to receive it using Internet filing software, and the date of dispatch becomes fixed.

On August 30, 2023, the Japan Patent Office announced that it will provide a function on its patent information platform; J-Platpat, to display and search information on the legal status of patents.
Patent applications filed with the Japan Patent Office on or after January 1, 1998 are eligible, with the first phase release scheduled for September 10, 2023.
Subsequent releases will follow in phases.

On August 31, 2023, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry released its tax reform request for FY2024.
The Innovation Box Taxation System applies preferential tax rates to income arising from patents and other intellectual property.
