Patent System in Japan

On June 6, 2023, the government's Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters announced that it would set up a system that would allow Japanese universities to offer patents obtained jointly with companies to startup companies.

On June 7, 2023, a plenary session of the House of Representatives passed a revised law that brings together six intellectual property-related laws, including the Unfair Competition Prevention Law and the Trademark Law.

On June 8, 2023, the JPO published "Making Your Startup a Success.
The aim is to support new businesses from an IP perspective and enable them to develop their own business strategies.

On April 7, 2023, the JPO announced that it will end its handling of new coronavirus (COVID-19) infections as they will be moved to category 5 infections effective May 8, 2023.
Accordingly, the operation of the existing remedial measures will be restored.

On May 16, 2023, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) released a preliminary report on the results of its FY202 survey on university-launched ventures.
As of October 2022, the number of university-launched ventures was 3,782.
This is an increase of 477 firms from the 3,305 firms in FY2021, a record number of firms in both number of firms and increase in number of firms.
