Patent System in Japan

Commissioner Hamano and Patent Engineer Katsura from the Japan Patent Office attended the 64th General Assembly of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization held in Geneva, Switzerland, from July.
Secretary Hamano delivered a general speech on behalf of Japan, introducing Japan's international efforts in the field of intellectual property.

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) announced that it conducted an online training course on the patent opposition system for patent examiners of the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office (MyIPO) in May of this year.

On July 7, 2023, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) announced that it will establish a J-Startup; Japan Pavilion at the CES tech event in Las Vegas, USA.

On July 3, 2023, the JPO revised the Formalities Examination Handbook in accordance with the revision of the Formalities Examination Handbook dated April 1, 2023.
The main reasons for the revision are as follows

On July 1, 2023, the JPO and the French Industrial Property Office agreed to begin accepting PPH MOTTAINAI and PCT-PPH applications in order to expand the number of cases eligible for Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) applications.
The PPH pilot program will run from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024, with the possibility of extension thereafter.
